Frequently asked questions

Life insurance questions, answered simply

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. If yours isn’t here, just ask.

Do I need life insurance if I have it through work?

Coverage through work is a valuable benefit, but it usually can’t go with you if you change jobs, and it’s often a multiple of your salary that may not match what your family would need. Many people look at their own coverage in addition.

What happens when my term policy ends?

The coverage ends. You may be able to convert some or all of it to a permanent policy, often at a higher cost, or apply for new coverage, which depends on your health and age at that time.

What’s the difference between term and permanent insurance?

Term covers you for a set period and is usually less expensive. Permanent coverage is designed to last your lifetime and can build cash value. Read our guide.

How is the cost of life insurance determined?

Several factors play a role, including your age, health, tobacco use, the coverage amount, and the type and length of the policy.

What’s the difference between the owner and the beneficiary?

The owner controls the policy, including who the beneficiaries are. The beneficiary is the person who receives the death benefit. They don’t have to be the same person, which is why it’s worth checking both.

Can I get coverage if I have health concerns?

There are options. Some policies are issued with fewer or no medical questions, and they may come with limits such as lower coverage amounts or waiting periods before the full benefit applies. We can walk through what may fit.

Do you offer tax or legal advice?

No. We can explain how products work, but for advice about your own situation, please consult an appropriate tax or legal professional.
